Irma was born on Nov. 20, 1928 to mother Beaty and father Ben Gorelick in Detroit, MI. After living in both Michigan and New York City during her childhood, the family returned to Detroit where Irma met her future husband, Philip Zald. They were married in 1952. The young couple set up housekeeping in Detroit and welcomed Harold in 1954 and Roberta in 1956. In 1959 they moved to Ann Arbor where Anne was born in 1960. Irma remained in Ann Arbor after Philip’s passing in 1976, where she sustained the family business and raised Anne as a single mother. Irma maintained a fiercely independent and active life and household until early in 2022.

During her life Irma worked for multiple businesses as a bookkeeper, including her parent’s businesses, construction companies in Detroit, Landau Custom Builders in Ann Arbor and supported her husband Philip’s challenging mid-life transition into a new printing franchise operation. She worked on the accounting staff for University of Michigan Student Publications, supporting the Michigan Daily campus newspaper and Michigan Ensian yearbook while retiring from that position in 1993.

Irma was very curious about the world and eagerly participated in multiple Road Scholar trips and many classes at Washtenaw Community College. She traveled extensively as a member of Nomads Travel Club and on various tours that took her to Australia, New Zealand, Bali, China, Tibet, Japan, Africa, England, France, Germany, Italy, Greece, Israel, the Galapagos Islands, Costa Rica and many U.S. locations. While in Costa Rica she challenged a jungle zip line and while in Africa she had her ultimate adventure while hot air ballooning over the Serengeti National Park while on safari.

Irma was accomplished at knitting, sewing and needlepoint and loved to be physically active - snow skiing and playing golf into her 80’s. Irma was herself an accomplished pianist and enjoyed all types of live and recorded music, live Shakespearean and musical theatre. She ushered for the University Musical Society for many years as well as attending Saturday Morning Physics lectures and Mini-Med School at the University of Michigan. Irma was a season ticket holder for University of Michigan Women’s Basketball and Softball teams and a regular fixture at her daughter Roberta’s Michigan Women’s Sports Alumnae functions.

Irma was preceded in death by her husband Philip, her parents Beaty and Ben Gorelick and her brothers Milton and Joseph. Her memory is cherished by her son Harold (Dianne), daughters Roberta (Tim Kirby) and Anne, grandchildren Philip (Heh Shin), Matthew (Justine), Jonathan (Mindy) and Rachael. She was an adoring great-grandmother to Bennett, Carter, Avery, Charlie and Mabel, and leaves behind sisters-in-law Bess Gorelick, Selma Gorelick and Joan Zald and numerous nephews and nieces.
