FUNERAL DETAILS

Joan Harf

Joan Harf, 91, of Erie, Pennsylvania, died on 07 March 2021.

The Funeral was a private family service at Temple Anshe Hesed in Erie, PA on Wednesday, 10 March 2021 at 10:00 AM .

Joan Harf was born in Erie on May 6, 1929, the daughter of the late Tillie and Louis Oster. She graduated from Mercyhurst College in 1951 with a degree in education.

Joan married Walter Harf, also of Erie, on September 23, 1951, which began a nearly 70-year journey of togetherness. A loving and supportive wife of Walter, she also raised three sons, maintained many life-long friendships, and led an active life of volunteer organization leadership in the Erie and Chautauqua, NY, Jewish communities as well as the community-at-large.

Joan’s positive attitude and bright smile were contagious, drawing others to join her in building local organizations that served thousands of women and children over more than 50 years. She served as the founding president of Hospitality House/SafeNet, a haven for women and children escaping abuse, and Stairways, which helps women battling mental health problems. She also was the president of several Erie-area organizations, including Temple Anshe Hesed’s Sisterhood, the Jewish Community Council, and the Chautauqua Hebrew Congregation. Joan also devoted herself to many hands-on volunteer roles in the Erie community.

She loved summers at the Harf home in Chautauqua, world travels with Walter and friends, family gatherings, and hosting friends in her home. Most of all, she loved Walter and the life they built, hand in hand.

Joan is survived by her husband Walter, sons and daughters-in-law David and Nancy Gad-Harf of West Bloomfield, MI, Michael and Susan Harf of Roanoke, VA, and Steven Harf and Leslie Carno-Harf of Beachwood, OH. Her grandchildren are Joshua and Danielle Gadharf, Isaiah and Dana Harf, Julian and Lydia Harf, and Joshua, Mikayla, and Zachary Carno-Harf. Her great-grandchildren are Jonah and Rylee Gadharf, Brody and Levi Harf, and Elliot Harf. Her nephews and nieces are Robert and Ellen Sender, Gary Sender and Maria Gradizy, Richard Oster, and Louise Peterson.
