Thelma was born April 17, 1926, in Shaker Heights, Ohio, the only child of Malvena (Buksbaum) and Frank Hilsenrath. Thelma was six when she lost her father. Later, she and her mother moved to join family in Brooklyn. Thelma had to leave New Utrecht High School in Brooklyn in her senior year to go to work, but went back at night to graduate. Thelma met Jack Ingber after the war in 1946, and they were married on Dec. 8 of that year. Her employment included working as a bookkeeper on Wall Street in New York and at the Scottex textile firm in Brooklyn throughout the 1970s.

After Jack died in October 1980, Thelma moved to a high-rise condo complex in Margate, Fla. In April 2014, Thelma moved to Metro Detroit to be near her son, Michael, and his wife, Esther; she also has a son and daughter-in-law, Phil and Debbie, in Kentucky. Thelma made many friends at her new home, Prentis Jewish Senior Life Apartments in Oak Park.

Family members include:
Beloved wife of the late Jack Ingber. Loving mother of Philip (Deborah) Ingber and Michael (Esther) Ingber. Adored grandmother of Jacquelin (Jonathan) Berman, David (Kristine) Ingber and Stephen Ingber. Cherished great-grandmother of Ethan and Alex Berman.
