Madeleine Berman, 90, of Franklin, Michigan, died on 05 February 2018.

The Funeral was held at IRA KAUFMAN CHAPEL on Thursday, 08 February 2018 at 11:00 AM .

Rabbi Aaron Starr and Hazzan David Propis officiated.

The family of Madeleine Berman will be gathering through the afternoon of Friday, February 09 at the residence, 30542 Hickory Lane, Franklin MI 48025.

The family will gather following interment on Thursday until 5:00 p.m. and again from 6:30-8:00 p.m.

Religious services will be held at 7:00 p.m. Thursday evening.

On Friday, the family will gather from 1:00-5:00 p.m.

Madeleine Berman, a prominent Detroit philanthropist, died at her Detroit residence on February 5th. Mrs. Berman, who was born in Detroit in 1927, received a BA in music from Northwestern University and married Mandell “Bill” Berman in 1950. After writing musical criticism for the Birmingham Eccentric, she received a Masters Degree in Speech and Communication from Wayne State University and began her career as a civic leader and arts philanthropist. A past member of New Detroit’s Arts Committee, Mrs. Berman was appointed by Mayor Coleman Young to the first Detroit Arts Council and by Governor Milliken to the Michigan Council of the Arts. Later on she joined President Clinton’s President’s Committee for the Arts and Humanities and held the same post under President Obama.

Mrs. Berman was a member of the board of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, the Ringling Museum of Arts in Sarasota Florida, and the national arts advocacy organization, Americans for the Arts from whom she received its prestigious Legacy Award in 2014. She was a major supporter of the Detroit Institute of Arts, the Michigan Opera Theatre and the Detroit Zoo, where she established the Madeleine Berman Academy for Humane Education. She also served on the board of the Michigan Humane Society and funded one of its shelters in Westland, Michigan. With her husband, Bill, Mrs. Berman built and supported the Berman Center for the Performing Arts in West Bloomfield, Michigan.

She is survived by her son, Dr. Jonathan Berman of Boulder Colorado (Nicky Berman), her daughter Ann Berman of New York City (Daniel Feld), and three grandchildren, Laurence, Sara, and Max.
