The daughter of Austro-Hungarian immigrants Moritz Lebowitz and Eva Kraus Lebowitz, Rosella Harvith was born in Detroit on Sept. 9, 1914; she was the youngest and last surviving sibling among seven Lebowitz children. A graduate of Detroit's Central High School, she met her husband of 69 years, Samuel G. Harvith, on a blind date while both were students at Central High. Mr. Harvith died on April 12, 2007, in Waterloo, Ontario, at age 92. Rosella Harvith worked as a retail sales associate at Himmelhoch Brothers and Company on Woodward Avenue in downtown Detroit prior to her marriage in June 1937. Rosella Harvith became a member of Congregation Shaarey Zedek 80 years ago, in 1937. As an active member of the Shaarey Zedek Sisterhood, Mrs. Harvith organized a highly successful fundraising gala event for the Sisterhood at Cobo Hall [now Cobo Center] shortly after the convention center's opening. In 2003, she and Samuel Harvith emigrated from the metropolitan Detroit area to Canada to live with their daughter, Sharee Fahidy, and her husband, Thomas Fahidy. Rosella Harvith is survived by, in addition to Sharee and Thomas Fahidy, her son, John D. Harvith, and his wife, Susan Edwards Harvith; six grandchildren, six great grandchildren, and one great-great grandchild, as well as a niece, five nephews, and numerous grand- and great-grand nephews and nieces.
