We mourn the passing and celebrate the life of Ileane Levine Thal (May 23, 1932 - November 24, 2015), beloved wife of Bruce Thal. She was a woman of strength, courage, and elegance, a fiercely loyal friend and family member and a cosmopolitan lover of art, literature, and style. Ileane was raised in Mount Clemens, Michigan, the daughter of the late Samuel and Evelyn Levine. She attended the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor in 1950-1953, where she and Bruce Thal met in the Michigan League on a fall afternoon in her first semester. They were married in 1953 and raised three children, Denise, Bob, and Sue, in Oak Park and then Huntington Woods, before moving to Birmingham.

Ileane completed her undergraduate degree at the University of Michigan, Dearborn in 1980 and earned a Master's in Library Science from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, in 1983. For more than 18 years, she served as a reference librarian in the Baldwin Public Library in Birmingham. After retiring, she was twice elected (in vigorously contested elections) by the citizens of Birmingham to four- year terms on the Library Board of Directors. An energetic community leader, she served as well on the Board of Trustees of Jewish Family Service of Metropolitan Detroit and the Board of Trustees of the Women's Division of the Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Detroit. She was a long-time peer advocate for Reach of Recovery, a network of support for survivors of breast cancer.

Ileane was a voracious reader of contemporary fiction and a passionate devotee of contemporary art. She loved nothing more than exploring galleries or talking with her children, her grandchildren, and their friends about the latest novels they were reading. Her no-nonsense open-mindedness made her a cherished mentor to younger relatives and her friends' children.

In addition to Bruce Thal, Ileane is mourned by a large community of relatives and friends. She is survived by her sister Janet Mellman (Al), and by her brother Dr. Stephen Levine (Jackie), all of Los Angeles, her sister-in-law Dorothy Thal (widow of the late Richard Thal) and her sister-in-law Eleanor Wolf (widow of the late Donald Thal) and Eleanor's husband William Wolf. She is also survived by her loving children Denise (David Scobey) Thal, Robert Thal, and Susan (Edward Siebert) Thal, and grandchildren whom she adored: Jacob, Raphael, and Isaac Scobey-Thal, and Samantha, Jesse, and Lena Siebert.

The family of Ileane Thal will be gathering on Wednesday November 25th from 3:00-7:00pm, Friday November 27th from 2:00-5:00pm following the internment service, and Sunday November 29th from 3:00-7:00pm at 300 Ferndale, Birmingham. The phone number is 248-644-8095.
