As the eldest child, she returned to Chicago to earn money to help support her family including assisting her brothers and sister attend college. Dorothy spent a brief time in Florida where she met her husband, Louis, and then moved to Wayne, Michigan to work in the war plants where she resided until moving to Ann Arbor in 1989. With hard work and determination, Lou and Dorothy made a good life for themselves and their children. Dorothy spoke Yiddish until learning English in kindergarten allowing her to interpret for her family. She loved school and graduated at the top of her class and often substituted for her teachers in her small rural schools. In her mid thirties, Dorothy finally could afford to go to college. She went on to receive Bachelor and Masters degrees from Eastern Michigan University and taught first grade for 26 years in the Wayne/Westland School District. She retired at the age of 72 after which she continued to run her late husband's scrap business.
