“You are my sunshine, my only sunshine.”

Charles, age 91, passed away May 31, 2014 at Henry Ford Hospital in West Bloomfield, Michigan. He was born on July 17, 1922 in Toledo, Ohio, the eldest of three children raised by Russian and Polish immigrants, Hyman and Celia Ruben. Charles is survived by his wife of 66 years, Bella; daughter and son-in-law, Ellyce and Dr. Stephen Field of West Bloomfield; daughter and son-in-law, Dr. Nancy Turner and J.T. Turner of Charlotte, North Carolina; and son and daughter-in-law, Dr. Douglas Ruben and Arlene Allan of Okemos, Michigan; grandchildren, Jordan and Marjie Field of Huntington Woods, Dr. Garrett and Nayomi Field of Athens, Ohio, Andrew Field of Toledo, Ohio, Jeffrey Macciomei of Raleigh, North Carolina, Michael Ruben, of Okemos, and Jennifer Ruben of Okemos, children of Ms. Marilyn Ruben; great-grandchildren, Logan Field and Dylan Field; nephews Mark Ruben (and wife Linda), Bruce Ruben (and wife Mindy); nieces Joan and Marsha Smelkinson; loving sister Florence Smelkinson (and late husband Isadore) and brother Jerry Ruben (and wife Ann). Charles’ father Hyman, a fruit peddler, relied on young Charles’ talent with numbers and calculations to make change for customers. This foreshadowed his passion for accounting. Charles graduated from Detroit’s Central High School and briefly attended Wayne State University before serving two years (1943-1945) in the Army as a Technical Sergeant in Intelligence. He returned to Wayne State University for his Bachelors in Accounting, later earning the distinction of CPA. He co-owned the CPA firm Ruben & Weisman for over 35 years. He described his longtime friend and partner Jerry Weisman as “perfectly compatible.” At Wayne State University, Charles also met his soul-mate Bella. Charles was a long-time member of Congregation B’nai Moshe Synagogue, from its Detroit roots to thriving years in Oak Park and West Bloomfield. He served as President of B’nai Moshe from 1972 to 1974. He and Bella were honored by Congregation B’nai Moshe twice for their lifetime contributions and donations. A strong sports enthusiast, Charles enjoyed season tickets to the Redwings and Pistons, but truly loved the game of baseball. In retirement, he dedicated his time to family—his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Charles and Bella lived their dream of spending winters in Boca Raton, Florida. Wherever he went, Charles was a patriarch and confidence-builder; his patience and sensitivity inspired his nieces and nephews. His motto was that you can do anything if you try. With a twinkle in his eye and a quiet charm, Charles won the trust of professionals and played a significant role in community Judaism. To his survivor Bella, who he adored, Charles will be remembered for his sweet and passionate serenades of “You are my Sunshine, my only Sunshine.” For Bella, Charles was the real Sunshine, who made her happy when times were gray.
