He was a beloved dentist in Windsor, Ontario but above all, a devoted husband, father and grandfather. Born February 26, 1932, in a small town in Northeastern Romania, Aron was the youngest of six children of the late Meir and Chaya Sarah Blumenthal. He was the baby of the family, 13 years younger than his next oldest sibling. During the Holocaust, Aron and many of his family members survived the concentration work camp called Transnistria. They were able to avoid capture for a while by hiding out in rural area in what is now Ukraine. Aron’s mother and sisters needed to remain in always hiding or were at risk of being raped by soldiers. Aron who was no more than 13 years of age at the time, knew a few Russian words, posed as a Russian boy and would manage to find food for his mom to prepare for the family even if it only meant finding rotten potatoes. These early survivor skills served him well in life. His entire immediate family survived the Holocaust thanks to Aron’s efforts.

He met his wife, Rodica in 1964 outside of Synagogue and 3 months later they were married. Aron’s dream was to emigrate to America and found a way by declaring refugee status in Italy. The organization called Hebrew Immigrant Aid Society (HIAS) helped him achieve his dream and located a foster family in Detroit that would help Aron and Rodica get settled. When they arrived in Detroit, Rodica was pregnant, and they didn’t know any English or have any family or friends upon arrival. Aron was a dentist in Romania before fleeing to Italy and was offered a job working as a dental technician. He worked long hours, studied English in the evenings and ultimately got accepted to a Dental School in Detroit.

He learned of a dental practice for sale in Windsor and eventually with hard work and many long hours, he was able to purchase it on his own. He practiced dentistry until age 85. He also took his skills and knowledge and shared it with dental hygienist students and served as a dental professor at St. Clair College in Windsor. It was a position and responsibility he truly cherished. He also was a proud member of the Alpha Omega Dental Fraternity and rarely missed their annual international meetings.

He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Rodica Blumenthal, daughter, Ellyn Levine and Grandchildren, Robert and Alyssa Levine. He was the dedicated brother to his late siblings, Leon, Zigmund, Lora, Etta and Mina. He is also survived by many loving nieces, nephews and many other loving family members and friends.
