Lorraine Nadelman (Warschausky)

Lorraine Nadelman (Warschausky), 96, of Ann Arbor, Michigan, died on 02 May 2021.

The Funeral was a private family service on Tuesday, 04 May 2021.

Lorraine Nadelman (Warschausky) May 12, 1924 – May 2, 2021. Lorraine was lovingly married to Sidney Warschausky (z”l) for 57 years. She is survived by her children Seth (Sandra Finkel), Judith Childrey (Gary) and Carl (Laurie McCollum) and her sister, Edith Gittleman. She had eight adoring and adored grandchildren Aaron, Noah, Kara, Jacob (z”l), Max, Micah, Ryan and Gabriel.

Lorraine was a first generation American who grew up during the Great Depression. Her father died when she was a toddler and there were some significant challenges, but she had a very loving, strong and hard-working mother, as well as a loving extended family. So she grew up strong and loving, as well. She accomplished much including a four year scholarship to NYU for college and then graduate school. She then joined the faculty at Mount Holyoke College. When she and Sidney married, they came to Ann Arbor where she was a founding member of the Developmental Psychology department. She was voted the best lecturer in Developmental Psychology for three years in a row and her former students wrote her wonderful letters throughout her retirement. She had an NSF research award to study at the Tavistock Clinic with John Bowlby so the family lived in London for a year in the mid-1960s. She published two editions of her book: Research Manual in Developmental Psychology. She was an Emerita Professor, retired almost 25 years ago.

Simultaneously, she raised three children who fortunately were a piece of cake to raise. And if not, she still thought they were wonderful. Lorraine was enormously kind and loving. She often reached out to friends and neighbors to come over for drinks and meals. She lost sleep over many of them, out of love and concern when times were rough. When she laughed she sometimes peed her pants. She told us this once happened when she was carpooling with some faculty. Definitely not enough laughing until you pee in this world. Regularly, she would lovingly reproach her husband for telling dirty jokes at the dinner table. But she would smile underneath it all. What a great marriage - ups and downs but such devotion. And a life of love poems. After Sidney died, their friends came to us and said that Lorraine had taken care of them for many years and they intended to take care of her. And they did. We are so grateful for all the love that was given to Lorraine and just as grateful that so many allowed her to love them, as well.
