Dr. Weiss was born in 1928 in Detroit, the first American born child of Sam and Lilly Weiss, who had made there way to America with their other four children in the early 1920’s. He was a star athlete at Detroit Central High School, earning All-City football honors among other achievements. He attended the University of Michigan for undergraduate and dental school, and later returned to complete an oral surgery residency, and was a lifelong “Go Blue” supporter. He practiced oral surgery in Livonia for more than 40 years, and also served as a clinical professor at U of M’s Dental School for four decades, where an endowment for oral surgery research and education was established in his honor. He was very much respected for his skills, teaching and professionalism among his peers. After retirement, he continued to enjoy many activities including racquet sports, which he played to the age of 90, movies, reading, music, travel and mostly his time with his family, both near and far. He was a man with a strong moral compass and was a fine role model and provider for his children and grandchildren, who relished their relationship with their “Papa”. He was married for close to 60 years to his beloved Marilyn Weiss, with whom he cherished a wonderful marriage filled with family, close friends, and travel (including more than 50 cruises), and after her passing enjoyed the close companionship of Estelle Robinson.
