Family members include:
Beloved wife of the late Seymour Axelrood. Cherished mother of Debra (Gary Przepiora) Axelrood. Proud grandma of Sophia (Oliver Uberti) Kruz. Loving sister of the late Daniel (the late Estelle) Kletnick and the late Fred (the late Lorraine) Kletnick. Dear sister-in-law of the late Faye (the late Leonard) Eisenberg. Devoted daughter of the late Morris and the late Anne Kletnick. Also survived by many loving nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Born in Cleveland, Ohio on April 29, 1926, Mae grew up in Depression-era Chicago with her parents and two brothers, enjoying summers on the shores of Lake Michigan. In 1956, she and her husband, Seymour, left the city and moved to Trenton, Michigan as new parents. A stylish young woman, she worked at a clothing boutique and as a secretary before earning a bachelor’s degree in education from Eastern Michigan University. For the next twenty-five years, she was a dedicated and caring third-grade teacher in the Gibraltar and Taylor public schools, always championing the importance of education.

Upon retirement, Mae volunteered in the gift shop at Wyandotte Hospital and frequented the Detroit Symphony, Detroit Opera House, and Stratford Festival. Always proud of her Jewish heritage, she served on the board of directors for Beth Isaac Synagogue in Trenton and attended High Holy Day services each year at Temple Beth Emeth in Ann Arbor. Mae kept her mind sharp with the daily crossword and playing bridge with her friends. Her favorite sport was baseball, and while she adopted the Tigers after moving to Michigan, she was always a Chicago girl at heart. She loved the White Sox from her childhood on the South Side, and later the Cubs, which was Seymour’s team.

Mae loved to travel. She toured Europe with her daughter, Deb, in 1973 and later took many trips throughout the US and abroad with her siblings and the downriver American Association of University Women (AAUW) – including a memorable trip to Cuba. Every summer, she looked forward to vacationing “Up North” with her family on Lake Michigan. At 92, she flew all the way to California to dance the night away at her granddaughter’s wedding.

Mae was a selfless and strong woman. Not only was she a good mother and teacher, she also cared for her beloved and ailing husband for many years. As a proud mother and grandmother, she never missed an opportunity to spend time with her family. Whether it was a wedding, Passover Seder, ballet recital, or Hannukah party, Mae was there. Her sweet and thoughtful presence will be greatly missed.
