Family members include:
Beloved husband of 60 years of Barbara (Sorscher) Alpern, PhD. Cherished father of Bernard "BJ" (Pyper) Alpern, Dr. Elizabeth (Dr. Michael Berkwits) Alpern, and Marc Alpern. Proud and loving Zayde of Hannah King, Samuel, Margaret, and Charlotte Alpern, and Ava and Talia Berkwits. Dear brother-in-law of Dr. Irving Sorscher. Loving brother of the late Eugene Alpern and brother-in-law of Phyllis Alpern. Devoted son of the late Philip and the late Blanche Alpern and son-in-law of the late Shirley Sorscher. Also survived by many loving family and dear longtime friends.

Irwin loved his family deeply and enjoyed the accomplishments of his wife, children, grandchildren, and friends. He was a dedicated certified public accountant and advisor to many for over sixty years. He was a valued member of the Michigan Association of CPAs. Irwin was an expert genealogist and was passionate about finding his own family history and assisting others in their search. He always cheered his MSU Spartans. Irwin was compassionate, caring, and had a full-hearted desire to be of service to others.

Metro Detroit’s Jewish funeral homes have agreed that families should follow the directive of Centers for Disease Control and restrict the size of gatherings to no more than 25 people inside and 50 at graveside.

For now, in-person funeral attendance will be limited to only immediate family. Otherwise, funerals may be viewed live and recorded on chapel websites.

Together, we thank the community for understanding during this unusual and challenging time.
