George was Professor Emeritus in the department of English Language and Literature at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. He received his B.A. from Harvard University in 1963 and his Ph.D. from Princeton University in 1966. He joined the University of Michigan faculty as an associate professor in 1970 and was promoted to professor in 1975. He was appointed the C.A. Patrides Collegiate Professor of English in 1995. George was an admired scholar of modernism. His decades of devotion to the study of the literature and culture of the later 19th and first half of the 20th centuries, highlighted by his energetic teaching, tireless advising, work at conferences, service to the profession and his prolific publication record, have furthered scholars’ understanding of an extraordinarily wide range of topics in the field of literary studies. He made Michigan a congenial, challenging, and productive center for students of modernism-whether they were undergraduates, graduate students, colleagues, or distinguished faculty from institutions around the world. His many former students, now teachers and scholars themselves, are continuing to shape the study of 20th century literature, profiting by his training and his example. In his courses and publications, George always encouraged students and readers to cross intellectual, historical, and methodological boundaries, whether it be to bring Romantic and Modern poets into conversation with one another, to combine editorial theory with incisive interpretive approaches to poetry and prose, or to rethink questions of the social and aesthetic constructions of race and ethnicity in the light of a deeply historicized characterization of modernism. Most importantly, George was: Beloved husband of Jane York Bornstein. Cherished father of Benjamin Bornstein, Rebecca Bornstein (Alex Roy), and Dr. Joshua (Mei) Bornstein. Proud grandfather of Lilya Bornstein Roy and Serena Zhu Bornstein. Special nephew of Madelon and the late Elmer Price. Devoted son of the late Harry and the late Celia Bornstein. Dear son-in-law of the late Marjorie and the late Charles York. Loving cousin of Grant (Frances Wu) Price, Jonathan (Naomi Schacter) Price, Jennifer Price, Laurie (Neale Eckstein) Laba, Michele (David) Artus, Doug (Lauren) Tashma, the late David Price, and the late Gerald Laba. Dear brother-in-law of Laura York Case, Deborah (Gary) Bast, and Jennifer York (Michel) Emerit. He is also survived by other loving relatives and friends. Metro Detroit’s Jewish funeral homes have agreed that families should follow the directive of Centers for Disease Control and restrict the size of gatherings to no more than 25 for an outdoor service, or 18 for an indoor service.
