Elaine S. Dickstein, 85, passed away January 16, 2021, surrounded by her children and grandchildren at Hospice of Dayton after a one month battle with COVID-pneumonia.

Elaine was born to Stanley and Rose Baru in St. Louis, Missouri, on October 24, 1935. She grew up in Muskegon, Michigan, attending the University of Michigan and graduating with a teaching degree in 1957. She subsequently earned a Masters Degree in Education from Wayne State University. Elaine dedicated 43 years of her life to teaching elementary and middle school children in the Hazel Park Public School district. She was a passionate educator and advocate for her students, many of whom she maintained contact with up until her death. Elaine was a fervent supporter of public education and the teachers’ union, representing her fellow teachers as a leader in her local branch of the Michigan Education Association. She actively supported both the performing and visual arts, and never met a dog or cat that she didn’t adore.

Elaine was preceded in death by her parents and former husband, Sidney Dickstein (Cindy Dickstein). She is survived by her brother David Baru (Lois Adler), children Sheri Dickstein (Ira Silverman), and Gary Dickstein (Shelley Strang Dickstein), and grandchildren, Aaron & Abigail Dickstein and Lexie Silverman. She also leaves dozens of bereaved nieces and nephews as well as great- and great-great nieces and nephews on both the Baru and Dickstein sides of the family. She will also be greatly missed by her special girlfriends in the Detroit area.

Metro Detroit’s Jewish funeral homes have agreed that families should follow the directive of Centers for Disease Control and restrict the size of gatherings to no more than 25.

For now, in-person funeral attendance will be limited to only immediate family. Otherwise, funerals may be viewed live and recorded on chapel websites.

Together, we thank the community for understanding during this unusual and challenging time.
