Joan "Joni" LevitskyJoan "Joni" Levitsky, 81, of Ann Arbor, Michigan, died after sunset on 15 January 2020. The Memorial Service was held at Beth Israel Congregation, 2000 Washtenaw Ave, Ann Arbor, MI 48104 on Monday, 20 January 2020 at 1:00 PM . Rabbi Nadav Caine officiated. Click to watch a video of the recorded service. Interment at Out of State. Family members include: Beloved wife of Ambassador (Ret.) Melvyn Levitsky, University of Michigan professor. Cherished mother of Adam (Sara) Levitsky, Ross Levitsky, and Josh (Rachel) Levitsky. Proud grandmother of Abigail, Michael, Maxwell, Danielle, Mason, Phoebe, Mia, and Benjamin Levitsky. Loving sister of the late Suzanne (the late Dr. Edward) Shindler. Dear sister-in-law of Sharon Levitsky. Joan (or Joni as she liked to be called) served alongside her husband in diplomatic posts in Frankfurt, Germany, Moscow, U.S.S.R., Sofia, Bulgaria, and Brasilia, Brazil. Her grace, wit, joyous demeanor and loving manner represented the United States in a way that allowed her to make hundreds of friends worldwide and help promote American national interests. She was an enthusiastic fan of University sports and an active supporter of the Gerald R. Ford School of Public Policy where her husband teaches. She will be missed by her many friends in Ann Arbor and around the world. Immediately following the memorial service on Monday, there will be a Shiva minyan held at Congregation Beth Israel. There will also be a service at the synagogue on Monday evening at 7:30 p.m. On Tuesday, friends and family will be gathering beginning at 7:00 p.m. at the residence, 2427 Moors Court, Ann Arbor, MI 48108.
