When The Ira Kaufman Chapel was designed and built almost 40 years ago, it is obvious that the needs of every family were considered to maximize the opportunities to serve them based on their preferences. This foresight is a chief reason the chapel is still considered one of the finest and functionally sound facilities in the nation.

The Main Chapel can now accommodate as many as 550 people and is where 70 percent of the services are conducted at The Ira Kaufman Chapel. The family's room, off the alcove, provides comfort prior to the funeral and maximum flexibility for privacy. Each family has at its discretion the option of remaining in this room during the service or joining the rest of those assembled in the chapel.

For smaller gatherings, The Garden Chapel offers the perfect complement for families in which no more than 50-60 people are anticipated to attend the service.

In recent years, two of Detroit's major Jewish cemeteries have availed families of the chapel on their grounds. Although smaller, these chapels extend a compromise for families inclined to have a graveside service but concerned with the obstacles graveside services could present.

The Ira Kaufman Chapel has always offered and performed graveside services. Our objective is to make each service as comfortable as possible, even taking into account factors out of our control. For graveside services, a family may have to consider the potential for inclement weather and the lack of seating or a covered area.

A word of caution about graveside services:

  • Our periodic surveys have always indicated the perception that graveside services were meant for the immediate family, sending mixed signals to friends regarding the issue of privacy
  • From the arrival at the cemetery to the conclusion of the service often more than 30 minutes it is difficult to expect everyone in the gathering, especially the elderly, to be able to stand for the duration

The Ira Kaufman Chapel has and will always fulfill the preferences of the families we serve, whether that preference is chapel services or otherwise.
