Richard H. Lobenthal, 83, died on 26 September 2017.

The Memorial Service was held at IRA KAUFMAN CHAPEL on Thursday, 28 September 2017 at 4:30 PM .

Rabbi Arnie Sleutelberg officiated.

The family of Richard H. Lobenthal will be gathering through the evening of Monday, October 02 at the residence, 4915 Fairway Ridge Circle, West Bloomfield MI 48323. The phone number is 248-855-2289.

The family will be gathering on Thursday immediately following the service with religious services being held on Thursday evening at 7:00 p.m. There will be no shiva on Friday or Saturday due to Yom Kippur. The family will continue gathering informally on Sunday and Monday, beginning each day at 3:00 p.m.

Family members include:
Beloved husband of 40 years of Judith Kovach. Cherished father of Adam (Jackie) Lobenthal, Lisabeth (Patrick Thomi) Lobenthal, the late Joshua Lobenthal and the late Debbie Kovach. Proud grandfather of Jamie Colecchia, Michaela and Joey Lobenthal, Aaron Ellern, Sarah (Michael Yanez) Lobenthal, Ruth (fiance Chris McBride) Lobenthal, and James Lobenthal. Adoring great-grandfather of Cassidy Colecchia, Owin and Parker Reams, Orianna, Okira and Obadyah Yanez, and Layla Lobenthal. Loving brother of Joseph (Anna Green) Lobenthal, the late Lila Gordon and the late Stanley White. Also survived by his loving and faithful dog, Brandon.

Richard spent his life fighting against intolerance. He was committed to fighting for social justice and defending constitutional rights for all people and protecting the rights of minorities.

He was the Michigan Director the Anti-Defamation League of B'nai B'rith (ADL) from 1964-1996. He was also the Mid-West Regional Director of ADL and the interim Director of the Michigan chapter of American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) after his retirement from ADL.

Richard also served as the interim Director and President of the Board of the Ecumenical Council of Detroit. He served on the boards of the following organizations: The National Association of Independent Artists and the Michigan Psychological Association Foundation. He was a professor of Sociology at Wayne State University and had a weekly radio broadcast for over 20 years on Detroit Public Radio (WDET).
