Garrett Halpert passed away on September 7th at the age of 23 after a recurring struggle with mental illness. Known for his compassion, goofy humor and deep sensitivity, he was a great friend to many and a devoted son and wonderful brother. He was quick to give a deep hug to show how much he cared about everyone close to him. A pied piper of sorts, he adored young children as they did him. This was evident when he ran the tennis program at Georgetown Country Club and was a camp counselor at the Ann Arbor YMCA, two experiences he cherished. He was an incredible mentor to others, especially through a peer to peer mentorship program he participated in during high school. He received his Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Michigan in 2016, majoring in psychology. He hoped to study social work or psychology in graduate school. This past year, he was an assistant teacher in the City Year program, where he introduced mindfulness and meditation to at risk students with great success. Right up to his passing, Garrett was reviewing how he would achieve his dream of helping others in life and find a purpose married to that dream. Garrett was an accomplished tennis player and was the number one singles player at Pioneer during his four years of high school. He loved to play piano, sing, meditate and spend time in nature. He brought joy to everyone who knew him and will be missed by so many whose lives he's impacted in a positive way.

In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting that memorial gifts are made to the University of Michigan Depression Center, c/o Michigan Medicine Development, 1000 Oakbrook Drive, Suite 100, Ann Arbor, MI 48104.
