Joseph Garlock was a lifelong Detroiter. He graduated from Northern High School and Wayne State University School of Pharmacy. After serving as a lieutenant j.g. in the Navy during World War II, he returned to Detroit to start his family and career. He worked as a pharmacist in Detroit until the mid 1950s, when he bought a drug store in Pontiac, Garlock Drugs, which he owned for 25 years. He continued working as a pharmacist until 2006 (age 87) and only stopped then because Farmer Jack, where he had worked for more than a decade, went out of business. He loved his work and would happily have continued it into his nineties.

Only family and friends brought Joe more pleasure than his work. He married the love of his life, Phyllis Sandelman, in September 1941, and he was in love with her and completely devoted until the day he died. He was a tireless cheerleader and role model for his children and grandchildren, a caring and attentive friend, a thoughtful and generous mentor. He taught himself to use information technology so that he could stay up-to-date with advances in pharmacy as well as with his grandchildren, and he was a tough competitor at a variety of computer word games.

Mr. Garlock was the devoted husband of 75 years of Phyllis Sandelman Garlock; cherished father of the Honorable Nancy (William) Edmunds, the late Dr. Judy (Robert) Cheek, and David (Barbara) Garlock; proud grandfather of Ben and Nathan (Jenna) Edmunds, Jon (Laura) Cheek, Laura (Aaron) Llanso, Amy, Jackie and Stephanie Garlock; adoring great-grandfather of Darren and Andrew Cheek, and June Edmunds. He is also survived by many devoted cousins, nieces, and nephews, and by wonderful caregivers, Karen Holloway, Jackie Harris-Cary, Yvette Harris, and Sholanda Dawkins.
