David Paul Lyons, loving husband of Christina Lyons, brother of Barry and Russell Lyons, and uncle of Daniel and Michael Lyons, was born on October 17th, 1960 in Stoneham, MA to Rosalyn and Donald Lyons. David grew up in Lexington, MA. He started taking piano lessons as a child and decided as a teenager to pursue a career in classical music.

David received music degrees from the University of Michigan, SUNY Stony Brook, Indiana University, and the University of Oregon, studying with leading piano teachers including Menahem Pressler and Charles Rosen. As prize winner of the Washington International Competition for Pianists, David performed at the Main Hall of the Kennedy Center. His tours with Daniel Gaede, former concertmaster of the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra, include performances at Carnegie's Weill Hall, the Phillips Collection of Washington D.C., as well as broadcasts on National Public Radio.

Beginning in 2005, David turned his talents to composition. His piece for solo piano, "Two Sides of Night," was awarded first prize in the 2005 Composers Guild Competition. His piece for violin and piano, "Fantaisie Mystique," won first prize in the category Instrumental in the 2013 Composers Guild composition contest. From fall 2007 through fall 2016, he worked as collaborative pianist at SIU Carbondale. You may listen to his music here: https://soundcloud.com/davidplyons

David's life was cut short tragically by mental illness on January 28.
David's family asks for those who wish to honor David to remember him through music and through contributions to the Out of the Box music festival at SIU, Mail Code 4302, OTB/Lyons Memorial, 1000 S. Normal Avenue, Carbondale, IL 6290, 618-536-8742. David's last plan was to do a fundraiser in his wife's church for the music festival, which has suffered budget cuts in recent years. David has performed for the past years at this event, recently playing his wife's pieces. http://cola.siu.edu/music/featured-stories/013017-lyons.php
