Dr. Laurence Alan Boxer, dedicated pediatric hematologist/oncologist, loving husband, father, and grandfather, and loyal colleague and friend passed away peacefully surrounded by his family at the University of Michigan Hospital on January 7, 2017, from myeloma at age 76.

Larry was born May 17, 1940, in Denver, Colorado, to the late Sam Boxer and the late Tillie Belstock Boxer and grew up there surrounded by a large and loving extended family. He graduated from East Denver High as a proud "East Angel." He received his B.A. magna cum laude from the University of Colorado at Boulder and his M.D. from Stanford University School of Medicine. He completed his pediatric residency at Yale University (where he met Grace who was a medical student) and Stanford University and his pediatric hematology/oncology fellowship at Boston Children's Hospital of Harvard Medical School where he was then appointed as an Instructor in Pediatrics. Laurence and Grace were married at her family's home in Brawley, California, on August 23, 1969. Larry was a Major in the U.S. Army at Tripler General Hospital, Honolulu, Hawaii from 1969-1972. Together Larry and Grace learned about the history and land of Hawaii and explored all the islands, including service at the leprosy colony at Kalaupapa on the island of Molokai.

Larry joined the Department of Pediatrics of the Indiana University School of Medicine, Indianapolis, in 1975 and rose through the ranks to Professor. In 1982 he joined the University of Michigan Medical School as Professor and Director of the Division of Pediatric-Hematology Oncology. He was honored to become the inaugural Henry and Mala Dorfman Family Professor of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology in 2003.

His personal academic interests in the study of neutrophils and disorders of neutrophil biology led to multiple advances in the diagnosis and care of patients with defective neutrophil function, failed neutrophil development and treatments to increase neutrophil recovery following cancer therapy. His scientific contributions and accomplishments led to many awards, invited professorships and leadership positions in major academic societies including the American Society of Hematology, the American Society for Clinical Investigation, the Association of American Physicians, the American Clinical and Climatological Association, the Society for Pediatric Research, the American Pediatric Society, and the American Society of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology. In 1982 Larry was awarded the E. Mead Johnson Award-the highest award given by the Pediatric Academic Societies-recognizing major scientific contributions to pediatric medicine. He received the George Norlin Distinguished Alumni Award from the University of Colorado and the J. E. Wallace Sterling Outstanding Medical Alumnus Award from the Stanford University School of Medicine. The University of Michigan established the Laurence A. Boxer, MD Research Chair of Pediatrics and Communicable Diseases in 2010. The American Society of Hematology honored him with its Mentor Award in 2016.

Larry was passionate about medicine and history. He was a wonderful colleague and mentor. He was loyal to both his adored Stanford Cardinals and the Michigan Wolverines. Even more than his professional accomplishments, Larry will be remembered for his witty humor with an endless supply of jokes and his kind and gentle nature. He will be greatly missed by his entire family, multitude of friends, and everyone whose life he touched.

Larry was the beloved husband of 47 years of Dr. Grace Jordison Boxer, the cherished father of David Ernest Keoni Boxer (Emily Maureen Benz) and adoring grandfather of Hugo Samuel Benz Boxer and Olympia Grace Ann Boxer. He was a loving brother of Michael Keith Boxer (the late Kathy Kenar Boxer) and the late Paul Meredith Boxer and a dear brother-in-law of Richard Charles Jordison (the late Carol Jane Speer Jordison). Larry is also survived by many loving nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, cousins, colleagues and friends, all of to whom he provided an endless supply of love, humor, and practical wisdom.

It is suggested that those who wish to further honor the memory of Dr. Laurence Alan Boxer may do so by making a contribution to:
