Norman E. Bash, 73 of Ann Arbor, Michigan passed away peacefully on October 12 surrounded by loved ones. He bravely fought cancer and kidney failure for over six years, giving his family many opportunities to spend quality time with him. Norm was born on May 24, 1943 in Borough Park, Brooklyn. N.Y., son of Jack Bash and Jeanette (Braus) Bash. Norm spent his first 7 years in Borough Park before the family moved to Chicago, IL. He attended Hyde Park High School and the University of Chicago, where he obtained a degree in chemistry. He continued on to get an M.B.A. from University of Chicago. While studying, he met Leslie Sager on a blind date. They married on June 20th, 1965.

Norm started his professional career with Rohm and Haas, a chemical company in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. This is where his children Stephanie and Jeff were born. Norm started a long career in strategic planning and marketing. In 1970, the family moved to Pittsfield, Massachusetts, where Norm worked on a variety of projects for General Electric, including the marketing of the plastic known as Lexan.

In 1978, Norm was offered the opportunity to work for General Electric's Far East Division in New York City. In this position, he traveled extensively to many countries in Asia. Norm developed a deep love of both travel and Asian cultures (especially food) during this period.

Beginning in the late 1980's, Norm worked for a series of manufacturing/chemical companies in Connecticut, Rhode Island and Ohio. His last position in manufacturing was with Freudenberg NOK, a German-Japanese auto parts company. He went on to consult with a variety of companies in the Detroit area. Norm and Leslie established a home in West Bloomfield in 1991, where they developed a great network of friends, which extended to Ann Arbor as well. In semi-retirement, Norm was free to pursue one of his greatest passions, competitive bridge. He competed in tournaments around the country.

Norm also served on a number of boards - he was a board member for the Michigan-Israel Business Bridge, which promoted business relationships between companies in Michigan and Israel. He also served on the board of the Performance Network Theater in Ann Arbor. Norm also participated in interviewing prospective students for his alma mater, the University of Chicago.

During Norm's illness, he found the strength to contribute to medical science in a number of ways, including participating in medical school panels on the experience of being a dialysis patient. He was also a tireless advocate for kidney research in Michigan, participating with the Michigan Kidney Foundation as a peer mentor. He also worked with University of Michigan doctors to secure a grant for additional research to improve the experience of dialysis patients. Norm will be remembered as a loving husband, big-hearted father and a good friend to many. He is survived by his loving and dedicated wife Leslie, daughter and son-in-law Stephanie Bash Soudry and Michael Soudry, son and daughter-in-law Jeff Bash and Sabrina Powers, nephews Daniel Bash and Jonathan Bash, grandchildren, Ben, Nadav and Maya Soudry, his brothers Roger and Josh, and sister-in-law Margo Bash.
