Joan Phyllis Friedman Slyker died the evening of March 10, 2016 (1 Adar II, 5776), in St. Petersburg, Florida, near her winter residence. She was 72 years old.

Joan is survived by her husband, Louis Joseph Slyker, their son Andrew Lev Slyker, her sisters Peggy Friedman Daitch (Peter Remington) and Margery Friedman Lynch (William Lynch), her brother Rodger Friedman (Kiki Nelson), aunt Betty Friedman Lublin, aunt Judith Levin Cantor (Bernard J. Cantor), niece Karen Elizabeth Daitch, nephews Joshua Keidan Daitch (Erica Dennison) and Jimmy Friedman Lynch, and many beloved cousins.

Joan was born February 4, 1944, in Detroit, the first child of Stanley B. Friedman and Miriam Levin Friedman. She graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Wisconsin at Madison, and went on to earn a Master's degree in Social Work from Wayne State University .

Joan married Louis Joseph Slyker, then program director at WTVS public television, in 1970. Their son, Andrew Lev Slyker, was born in 1984. Joan and her family were always very sympathetic to animals, and lived in companionship with several dogs and cats over the years.

Working with the parents of deaf children in Oakland County Schools, Joan became proficient in signing, which allowed her to communicate directly with the disadvantaged children. She continued to work in school systems throughout her professional career, including the Warren Consolidated Schools, Ferndale Schools, and the Roeper School.

Joan held the office of president of the Wayne State University Alumni Association as well as president of Wayne's School of Social Work Alumni Association and also of the Michigan State Association of School Social Workers. She participated on boards of many regional social work organizations and non-profit organizations

As a devoted member and past president of Congregation Shir Tikva in Troy, Michigan, Joan's bright spirit helped to shape that community's welcoming approach to traditional Judaism. Up north, Joan attended Congregation Beth El, and likewise served as its president. As a board member there, she helped engineer the vital merger between Beth El and Ahavat Shalom, which resulted in Congregation Beth Shalom of Traverse City.

Upon Joan's retirement in 2009, she relocated with Lou and their son Andrew to their summer residence on the shores of Torch Lake. In the nearby town of Alden, Michigan, she established "The Warm Fuzzy," a welcoming knit shop where regulars and strangers alike would go to "sit and knit" twice a week, just to be together. There she lightly created garments of astonishing beauty and skill.
