Dr. Patricia Joyce Oppenheim Levin Rice, PhD, a pioneer in the field of special education in Michigan and former wife of retired Michigan Supreme Court Justice, Charles L. Levin, died on January 18, 2016 at the age of 83. Memorial services will be held at David Oppenheim Memorial Chapel at Machpelah Cemetery in Ferndale, Michigan on Friday, January 22 at Noon.

Patricia Joyce Oppenheim was born April 5, 1932 to Royal A. and Elsa (Freeman) Oppenheim of Detroit. She married Charles L. Levin in 1956. They had three children: Arthur David Levin z"l, Amy Levin Ragen (Mathew), and Fredrick Stuart Levin (Marsha); and three grandchildren Jacob Elliot Ragen, Joshua Brooks Ragen, and Emily Rose Levin. After her divorce from Justice Levin in 1983, she relocated to Miami, where she would live for nearly 30 years. In 1990, she married Howard T. Rice z"l. They divorced in 1994. She is also survived by her sister Valerie Hart (Buddy) of Mt. Dora, Florida.

Dr. Rice began her teaching career in 1967 as a volunteer in the Detroit Public Schools. During the next 10 years she gave countless children with learning disabilities the gift of reading. Her success in raising student reading levels, led her to pursue masters and doctorate degrees in special education, which were awarded in 1973 and 1981, respectively.

In 1976, she joined the faculty of Marygrove College, where she directed a master's degree program to educate teachers in the field of learning disabilities. After leaving Marygrove College in 1986, she served as an adjunct professor at Oakland University, Florida International University and the University of Miami. She also served as a consultant to Lady Elizabeth School in Javea, Spain.

In addition to her work as an educator, she served both the Detroit and Miami communities as a tireless advocate and fundraiser for countless charities including, among others, the Woman's Auxiliary of the Children's Hospital of Michigan, the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, the Detroit Grand Opera, the Florida Grand Opera, and the Miami Ballet.

In the 1970's and 1980's, she was active in Michigan politics, where she helped to manage Justice Levin's campaigns for judicial office.

For several decades, she served as a board member and officer of Machpelah Cemetery Association, which was founded by her grandfather, David Oppenheim.

Her energy and dedication to her life's work as an educator and to her communities will continue to inspire her children and grandchildren. She lived her life on her own terms and never failed to find the humor in every situation. She would want us to remember that she always sailed confidently into a storm and never let life's disappointments get her down. She was a loving mother and grandmother and we will miss her greatly.
