Born in Detroit to Nathan W. Lurie and Ireta Netzorg Lurie, Barbara grew up in the Rosedale Park neighborhood of Detroit where she graduated from Redford High School. She received a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Michigan School of Education. It was at U of M that she met her husband of 70 years, Dr. Melvin "Bob" Yoffee (deceased) when she was attending undergrad at the U of M Dental School. Just five weeks after their wedding in Dec. 1943, Bob was shipped to the Admiralty Islands in the South Pacific as a Navy Lieutenant.

During the time Bob served in the Pacific, Barbara taught second grade and worked at a summer camp for mentally challenged children and youth. Barbara elected to be a stay-at-home mom when her first child was born. After her three children were enrolled in school, she went back to substitute teaching in inner-city Detroit.

Barbara was an active PTA member and classroom mom. Into her 90's, she was passionately involved in all kinds of crafts creating beautiful pieces of beadwork, weaving, knitting, needlepoint, and basketry. She was a longtime member of the Michigan Weavers Guild and twice traveled with fellow craftspeople to China and Thailand in her 70's.

Barbara is survived by her son Murray (Chong) Yoffee of Gardnerville, NV, daughter Kay (Dennis) Brown of Menlo Park, CA, son Hanley (Mary-Anne) Yoffee of Los Gatos, CA; grandchildren Risha (Michael) Neil, Berry (Matthew Rosen) Brown, Ian Brown, Angela (Gabe) Borland, Christopher Bosward, and Tery Hung; great-grandchildren Darya and Jacob Neil, Ellie and Teddy Brown-Rosen, Simon and Paisley Borland; sister-in-law, Lois Lurie Frank; cousin Marilyn Lurie Wolpin; many loving nieces and nephews in the Lurie, Safran and Solomon families.

Barbara was the loving sister of the late Richard (Dick) Lurie. She was predeceased by her sisters-in-law Ada (Arthur) Solomon and Leah (Hyman) Safran. She was the cherished niece of the late Amelia, Joseph, Sadie, and Theodore Netzorg.
