Joann Steinberg Chalat
March 6, 1928- Jan. 21, 2015

Joann Steinberg Chalat died Wednesday, Jan. 21, after a long life filled with love, learning and adventure. Her devoted husband of 62 years, Dr. Ned I. Chalat, cared for her tenderly throughout her last days and is heartbroken to be without his muse.

She died at home, surrounded by their beautiful collection of antiquarian books.

Joann was born in Detroit and attended public schools, graduating Magna Cum Laude from Central High School. She went on to earn a Bachelor's of Science Degree in Math and Science from the University of Michigan in 1949.

She became a certified orthoptic technician and worked for Dr. Ralph Pino, helping to test children's eyesight. In 1949, Joann married Ned Chalat at Franklin Hills Country Club and shortly thereafter moved to California while Ned served in the Air Force. While living in Livermore, Calif., Joann worked as a lifeguard at the at the Air Force base.

After returning to Detroit to raise their family, Joann became an active volunteer for Children's Hospital and several other organizations. She served on the Board of the Detroit Public Library, was a past president of the Detroit Book Club and a past president of the Arthur Rackham Society.

When her children were grown, Joann managed her father's business, White Color Card Company, a successful printing business that specialized in manufacturing color cards for the automotive and paint industries.

In September, 2000, Joann and Ned Chalat were honored as members of the Alexander Grant Ruthven Society for their contributions to the University of Michigan, including a rare and extensive collection of books illustrated by Arthur Rackham.

Joann's many dear friends also knew her as an ardent Democrat and champion for civil rights, a voracious reader, adventurous world traveler and gourmet cook.

Joann Chalat was preceded in death by her parents Mildred and Myron Steinberg and son Andrew Chalat. She is survived by her husband Dr. Ned Chalat, Grosse Pointe; her daughter Nan Chalat Noaker (Tom), Oakley, Utah; her son Jim Chalat (Linda) Denver, Colorado; and grandchildren Alexandra, Rachel, Grace and Harris Chalat and Dylan Noaker.
