Walter Kramer, age 92, died on Thanksgiving Day, November 27. A longtime resident of Southfield, he was predeceased by his wife of 57 years, Anne, and is survived by children Ruth E. Kramer of New York City and Mark Kramer of Winchester, MA, and grandchildren Colette and Owen Kramer. Born May 30, 1922 in Cologne, Germany, he grew up under harsh discrimination in the 1930s, escaping to Belgium in 1939, and then emigrating to Detroit in 1940. A quick study at language, he graduated from Central High in 1941, and then into the Army, and was deployed to England and France. Briefly returning to England in 1945, he renewed connections with his wife-to-be, who had also escaped from Hitler in 1939. A graduate of Wayne State University, he used his accounting skills at Ford Motor Company, retiring after 40 years. A lover of music, language, and numbers, he was often engaged with the puzzle section of the newspaper.
