Family members include:
Beloved wife of the late Martin Leinoff. Cherished mother of Deborah (Lanny) Lesser and Susan (Gary) Gilleran. Loving grandmother of Matthew Frank, Lauren (Jared) Gell, Renee (Michael) Stein, Kenneth Lesser, Eli Gilleran, Adrienne (Todd) Anderson and Gabriel Gilleran. Adoring great grandmother of Theodore Gell and Alexis Stein. Dear sister of the late Ethel (Hyman) Disner, the late Mildred (Irwin) Robinson, and the late Donald (Rae Ann) Sharfman. Also survived by many loved nieces and nephews.

According to Pearl Sharfman Leinoff, the only turns she ever made, in driving as well as in life, were right. She did it her way, coming of age in Detroit during the Depression and helping to serve the country during World War II. She worked tirelessly to raise two daughters on her own after the untimely death of her beloved husband, Martin Joshua Leinoff. Those lucky enough to call her mother, nana, aunt, co-worker and friend will remember her for the joy, intelligence and love that came to her so naturally. She adored people and was reciprocally doted upon, only fitting for someone born on Valentines Day, 1917.

Pearl was the second child of Rube and Anna Sharfman. She graduated Central High School at age 16 after advancing two grades at Winterhalter School. Pearl attended Wayne State University until she went to Washington D.C in 1938 to work for the Alcohol Tax Unit of the Bureau of Revenue. It was a brave move at the time. Family responsibilities compelled her to return home, where she continued to work, locally, for the Bureau.

Answering the call to serve during World War II, Pearl joined the Gray Ladies of the American Red Cross, providing companionship to hospitalized soldiers. She helped to staff the Blood Bank Canteen while also assisting the local Jewish Welfare Board in entertaining troops. Those efforts earned her the only E she ever received, an “E for Excellence” from the United States government. More recently, her contributions have been heralded in the permanent exhibition at the Detroit Historical Museum’s “Arsenal of Democracy “ under her maiden name, Pearl Sharfman. Her personal narrative of the war years remain part of the Veterans History Project, American Folklife Center, Library of Congress. Her husband and fellow Detroiter, Martin, who would forever be her hero, came into her life in high school. It wasn’t until she ran into him upon his return from the war, where he served as an army lieutenant in Europe, that they fell in love. They were married in 1949. He died 10 years later of leukemia, after they had brought two loving girls into the world.

Pearl continued to support her children while working at Hartman & Tyner, Inc., until 1992. From then on she devoted her love and wisdom, as she always had, to her family and friends.
