Family members include:
Beloved husband of the Late Rhoda Martel. Cherished father of Lisa (Brian) Hammer, Pamela (Allan) Bernstein, Caryn Martel, Jonathan (the Late Lisa) Martel, and David Martel (Patrick Francis). Loving grandfather of Adam Hammer, Michael Hammer, Jennie Bernstein, Paula Bernstein, Benjamin Martel, Sophie Rachel Martel, and Zachary Martel. Dear brother of Bess (the Late Joseph) Carroll, Mabel (Julius) Silver, and the Late Julius Martel.

William (“Bill”) Martel passed away on Sunday, August 10, 2014 in Ann Arbor with his family at his side. The cause of death was complications from Alzheimer’s disease. He was born in New York City on October 1, 1927. He graduated Tilden High School in Brooklyn as outstanding student of the year. After serving in the United States Air Force, he graduated from New York University in 1950 with a Bachelor’s Degree in English and from New York University Medical School in 1953. After his internship at Kings County Hospital in Brooklyn and residency at Mt. Sinai Hospital in New York City from 1953-157, he joined the University of Michigan Medical School in 1957, where he spent his entire career, recognized as the Fred Jenner Hodges Professor in 1985 and serving as Chairman of the Department of Radiology from 1982 to 1992. He oversaw the construction of the department in the new University Hospital and the acquisition of the first MRI system in the State of Michigan. He was a widely recognized teacher, researcher and clinician, having published more than 150 academic articles and sixteen book chapters. He was considered a pioneer in the radiology of joint diseases, was referred to as the “father of the radiology of rheumatic diseases” and was a widely sought after lecturer throughout the country and the world, known for his ability to impart knowledge and inspire students, and for his sense of humor. Speaking at a medical conference in Los Angeles right after the 1979 Rose Bowl, he interrupted his lecture to show a series of pictures projected on the lecture hall screen showing that, even though the USC running back Charles White was credited with scoring the winning touchdown against Michigan, he actually had fumbled the football on the one yard-line. To the hoots of the Los Angeles crowd, he explained that every radiologist understands that two views are required to make a diagnosis. He received the Amoco Outstanding Teaching Award by the University of Michigan in 1979. He loved Ann Arbor and the University, and was a member of the Ann Arbor Rotary Club. Dr. Martel was a devoted husband and father, always putting his family first. His wife, Rhoda Martel, passed away in 2001. He is survived by his two sisters, Bess Carroll and Mabel Silver, his five children, Lisa (Brian) Hammer, Pamela (Allan) Bernstein, Caryn Martel, Jonathan (Lisa, deceased) Martel, and David (Patrick Francis) Martel, and his seven grandchildren, Jennie Bernstein, Paula Bernstein, Adam Hammer, Michael Hammer, Benjamin Martel, Sophie Martel and Zachary Martel.
