Sally Lou Nosanchuk



Sally Lou Nosanchuk, 78, of Boca Raton, FL, formerly of Farmington Hills, MI, died on 21 February 2014.

The Memorial Service was held at Broken Sound Country Club in the Main Club House on Sunday, 16 March 2014 at 3:00 PM .

Family members include:
Beloved wife of Harry Nosanchuk for 60 years; Cherished mother of Carol (Jon) Birnkrant and Dr. Linda (Dr. Scott) Sircus; Loving grandmother of Michael Birnkrant, Jaclyn Birnkrant, Eric Sircus and Hilary Sircus; Sister-in-law of Dr. Jerry (Sherry) Nosanchuk and Joel (Marilyn) Nosanchuk; Devoted daughter of the late Fred Ettinger and the late Lois Ettinger; Loving daughter-in-law of the late Max Nosanchuk and the late May Nosanchuk; Sally Lou is also survived by many loving nieces, nephews, relatives, friends and by her devoted caregivers, Gwen Hawthorne and Carlene Elliott.

A Funeral was held at IRA KAUFMAN CHAPEL on Wednesday, 26 February 2014 at 10:00 AM. Rabbi Daniel Syme and Cantorial Soloist Rachel Kalmowitz officiated. Interment was at Beth El Memorial Park.

Sally Lou was a Home Economics teacher at Frost Junior High School, Oak Park, Michigan. She was the Ski Club Faculty Advisor and chaperoned student ski trips and many other school events. At her husband's request, she left her teaching career to join the family business. For thirty-three years, she was the General Manager /Chief Financial Officer of Knox Construction Company, Farmington Hills, Michigan.

She was a Community leader and philanthropist. She and her husband, Harry, were awarded the 2001 Justice Louis D. Brandeis Award, the Zionist Organization of America's highest merit citation. She was a member of the Israel Bond Prime Minister's Club, the Lion of Judah, the Jewish Federation Quarter Century Club, and a Trustee of the Michigan Opera Theatre. The Sally and Harry Nosanchuk Community Caring Fund pays for the cost of programs benefiting Senior Citizens. For many years, the fund provided free annual senior concerts, featuring the Michigan Opera Theatre, which entertained 1500-1800 persons at each performance. Each concert was featured several hundred times on cable television broadcasts, in both Michigan and Ohio. The fund videotaped High Holy Day and Shabbat Services that were distributed to Nursing Homes, Assisted Living Facilities and Hospitals throughout the United States and Canada.

In her youth, she was a championship ballroom dancer, a licensed aircraft pilot, who flew her Piper Comanche to many destinations in the United States and Canada. She was an accomplished skier, enjoyed White Water Rafting on the Colorado River, herded long horn cattle on horseback in the Rocky Mountains on "City Slicker" cattle drives. She sailed the Great Lakes in her cabin cruiser, the "Sally Lou". She traveled throughout North America, Africa, Asia and Europe.

She was a member of the Aircraft Owner's & Pilots Association, Knollwood Country Club, Detroit Athletic Club, Inverrary Country Club and the Broken Sound Club. She served as a volunteer and a Committee Chairman for many golf tournaments including the Ryder Cup, U.S. Men's Amateur, U.S. Open, U.S. Women's Open and the Allianz Championship. She is a former treasurer of the Jewish Home for Aged Auxiliary, a Life member of the Sinai Hospital Guild and a Lion of Judah. She was a member of the Michigan State University Alumni Association and Wayne State University Alumni Association.
